Life Insurance

Through the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation, you can leave a substantial gift to the community with a relatively small donation by purchasing a life insurance policy and naming the OJCF as the beneficiary and owner of the insurance policy.

The Purpose

To leave a substantially large gift to your community in perpetuity at a fraction of the cost to you.

How It Works

  • Purchase a life insurance policy of $100,000 or greater
  • Transfer the ownership of the insurance policy to the OJCF (as the beneficiary of the proceeds)
  • Provide the OJCF with a one time donation or an annual donation to be applied towards the annual insurance premium
  • Receive a charitable tax receipt now for your donation(s)

Do You Already Own An Insurance Policy?

You could designate the proceeds of your existing life insurance policy to the OJCF.  Simply call your insurance agent and request to change the beneficiary to receive the proceeds from the policy.  Subsequently, the OJCF will provide you with an official tax receipt for past premiums paid on the insurance policy.

Is Securing the Future of Jewish Education Important to You?

The OJCF can offer you an affordable means for you to leave an ever lasting legacy to your community with a designated purpose through the Gilbert Greenberg Education Fund (GGEF) subsidized insurance program.  The GGEF was established to honour the memory of the late Gilbert Greenberg, one of the great benefactors of the Ottawa Jewish Community.

The sole purpose of the GGEF subsidized program is to assist in the provision of affordable Jewish education for every child in our community.  The net proceeds of your insurance policy is held in perpetuity with the net income allocated annually for the purpose of providing educational funding for children attending accredited Jewish schools in the Ottawa region.

If this is of interest to you, we encourage you to contact our Foundation Associate, Rebecca Nagrodski, who would be happy to discuss this special program with you.

Is Securing your Gift to the Annual Campaign of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa Important to You?

You can endow your annual campaign gift through the  Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE) subsidized insurance program.  With the proceeds from your insurance policy, a permanent fund is established in your name for the sole purpose of endowing your annual campaign gift and will secure your lifelong investment to the community for generations to come.

At this time, the PACE subsidized insurance program is currently full.  If this is of interest to you, we encourage you to contact our Foundation Associate, Rebecca Nagrodski, who would be happy to discuss this special program with you.

A Gift via a Capital Replacement Plan

Your commitment to the Jewish community is evident in everything you do, and making a donation to the community through a Capital Replacement Plan can extend that commitment for generations to come.

A gift made via a Capital Replacement Plan allows the donor to make a donation today, with the advantage to use the savings in taxes to purchase a life insurance policy to provide your estate with the cash necessary to replace the value of the original donation. In this way, the donor's heirs are not deprived of their inheritance. In some cases, it may even exceed the initial donation.  To inquire about this further contact Jared Isaacson, OJCF Assistant Director.

The Benefits of Your Gift

The proceeds from your life insurance policy are paid directly to the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation.  Thus, your gift will not be included in your estate, avoiding higher probate fees.

The capital is an investment in perpetuity in your name.  In your name, your gift of life insurance will give tzedakah for future generations and beyond.

For more information on the many innovative gifting opportunities and the significant tax and estate planning benefits attributed from the gift, contact Jared Isaacson, Assistant Director.
